LEAN.in is a social project geared towards increasing access to legal services and awareness of legal rights for women in underserved communities. In this vein, we have authored a series of articles that explores the legal issues faced by this population: covering topics ranging from gender-based violence, workplace discrimination, and property and inheritance laws to raise and increment awareness. We have also curated a comprehensive handbook which details legal and constitutional protections available to women in the workplace, focusing on the rights of women in blue-collared and domestic work environments.
While these resources may provide women from underserved areas with the awareness and knowledge they require to access their rights, we understand that this may not always be possible without accessible legal aid. Hence, we have organized expert-led workshop sessions for women to receive one-on-one legal assistance from professionals at Unity Legal, a Delhi-based law firm. Apart from providing one-on-one help, these workshops will also expand on the information provided in our handbook, to ensure this population can access legal support in perpetuity.
To this end, LEAN.in is in the process of developing a well-informed repository of lawyers and law firms across metropolitan cities who work with underserved community members and provide them with pro-bono services or subsidized fees. Lastly, we plan to reach out to these firms and inquire into their willingness to pledge their support to this disaffected population in an attempt to foster lasting avenues for legal aid and support for people who may not otherwise be able to access them.
